PRICE ALERT!

HarperCollins raised the unit prices on both OverDrive eBooks and eAudiobooks by 18% between May 2022 and December 2023. In the same time period, it lowered the average unit prices of the same titles on Audible from $31.21 to $20.98.

HarperCollins is one of the “Big Five publishers. In the last year, it published ~2890 eBooks and ~1360 eAudiobooks on OverDrive under the publisher accounts listed below. It has many imprints and offers books for all ages.

  • eBooks: the standard eBook licenses allows one loan at a time and expires after 26 loans. At an average prices of $28.39, it exceeds the average cost of the print equivalent, $16.00. In May 2023, the average cost of the OverDrive ebook was $24.03. RF Not Recommended.

  • eAudio: the standard eAudio license allows one loan at a time and does not expire. At an average prices of $79.39, it exceeds the price of the Audible equivalent significantly: $20.98. In May 2023, the average price of the OverDrive license was $67.56. RF Not Recommended.

NOTES
HarperCollins acquired Harlequin in 2014 but the books are still tracked under separate publisher accounts in OverDrive. Harlequin unit prices tend to be lower and a better value than the licenses offered under HC proper.

  • 10 titles from Harlequin have an average OverDrive price of $16.59 with an average print price of $13.66. This is a 5% price drop compared to the average OverDrive price in May 2022 of $17.39.

  • 10 titles under “HarperCollins Publishers Inc” have an average OverDrive price of $40.18 with an average print price of 18.34. The OverDrive price is a 30% increase over the average price for a license in May 2022: $30.81.
