Blackstone Publishing is an independent publisher focused primarily on audiobooks. It coordinates on audiobooks with other large publishers including Hachette and Disney as well as publishing over 1,200 “home-grown” audiobooks per year. It also published ~75 eBooks in the last year.

  • eBooks: the standard eBook license allows one loan at a time and does not expire. The average eBook price on 20 titles is $35.14 while the average price on the print equivalent is $16.74. Because the license does not expire, a markup of 110% for the eBook may be acceptable to libraries looking for durably popular titles. RF Recommended.

  • eAudio: Blackstone’s “home-grown” eAudiobooks allow one loan at a time and do not expire. The average price on 20 titles is $54.60 while the price for the audiobook on CD averages $21.51. Since Blackstone publishes genre fiction that may be durably popular and audio unit prices are under $60 and do not expire, RF Recommended.

Concurrent use: Blackstone offers a concurrent use license in addition to the perpetual use license. The license, which they call "Metered Access: 100 checkouts (concurrent users)” offers 100 simultaneous use checkouts. It is priced at 150% of the perpetual use license. So The Bookwoman’s Daughter by Kim Michele Richardson has a perpetual use license that costs $59.95 and a “MACU” license for $89.92 for the eAudio format. A cost-per-circ of $0.90 is a better value than most of the titles available in OverDrive’s Cost-Per-Circ section. It appears that the “MACU” license is available on all titles, so libraries may wish to consider Blackstone Audio books when planning book clubs, book-of-the-month campaigns, or community read programs.
